HP Recovery CDs

Major computer manufacturers ship their computers with one or more recovery CDs, designed to return the hard drive contents to their original out-of-box state. These recovery CDs are often stored away and forgotten, or lost when the laptop is transfered to another owner or user. In many cases replacement Recovery CDs are no longer available from the OEM.

The HP Recovery CD-ROM re-installs the original operating system, drivers and utility programs. On newer models it also creates a diagnostic/hibernate partition.

Starting the recovery process is usually as simple as placing the first CD in the CD-ROM drive and re-booting from the CD. On older models that do not support booting from CD, a boot floppy needs to be created using a utility on the recovery CD.

Please note: the HP Recovery CD completely erases the hard drive - any important user files will need to be copied from the drive before starting the recovery process.

Important

Please note: You are purchasing a copy of the installation media only. You must have a valid Microsoft Product Key to use the recovery CD. We cannot provide this key. Normally, there is a Product Key sticker somewhere on your OmniBook, or the Product Key is with your system's documentation. Since your OmniBook was sold with Windows on it, you already legally own a license to that version of Windows, even if you obtained your OmniBook second-hand.

Also please note that each recovery CD is keyed to the particular notebook model, and will not work with other notebooks.

Faulty Hard Drive

Notebook hard drives are far more susceptible to damage due to shock and vibration from mishandling or dropping the notebook.

Symptoms of a failed/failing hard drive include:

• hard drive cannot be "seen" by the computer
• hard drive has significant or growing number of bad sectors
• drive is making a clicking or loud whirring noise

Replacement hard disk drives can be purchased in our eBay store. In conjuction with a recovery CD purchase we can provide technical pointers to installing the new hard drive. For some models we may be able to pre-install the operating system for an additional service charge.

Virus Attack

Some virus infections cannot be safely removed with modern anti-virus software. Symptoms of a "terminal" virus infection include:

• recurring messages from anti-virus software about unremovable virus
• machine does not boot and gives obviously hacker-inspired message (e.g. "we own your computer")

In this case the hard drive may need be to wiped clean before Windows is reinstalled. The Recovery CD performs this entire process for you in an efficient manner.

Faulty Recovery CD

If your original HP recovery CDs are heavily scratched or cracked, they should not be used -- Windows may appear to install successfully but you will experience difficulties at a later date. The HP recovery CDs will need to be replaced.

If we do not have the correct recovery CD for your model in stock, we can often make new HP installation CDs from your originals, even if the originals are damaged.
